GARANT protests against exclusivity over the “Palinka” brand

BUCHAREST – GARANT, the Organisation of Employers in the Industry of Alcohol and Liquors, launched a protest against a demand made by Hungary to be granted by the European Union the exclusive right of using the “Palinka” brand, for all alcoholic drinks made of fruit, grapes, or those made from distilled spirits. GARANT can prove the origin of this product, which imposed itself for centuries as a regional product in the former Austrian-Hungarian Empire’s area. Palinka is a regional product and GARANT does not reject the idea of mentioning, on the label, the product’s originating area: Budapest, Cluj, Bihor or even Covasna and Harghita. The employers’ organisation thus informs the organisms of the European Union that granting this unjustified privilege to Hungary infringes the fundamental principles of market economy and will bring serious economic and social prejudice to the Romanian industry of alcohol and liquors. Romanian producers invested tens of millions of dollars to meet internal and external Palinka demands and they are in danger of suffering immense and irreversible losses. To prevent this, GARANT reserves the right of suing in court the European Union organisms, if they adopt the decision of granting unjustified economic and legal privileges to Hungary.
